Types of Attic Insulation
Adding or upgrading spray foam insulation is one of the best ways to save money and increase comfort while reducing your home’s carbon footprint. It’s also a wise investment that can pay for itself over time through energy savings. The type of insulation you choose depends on the unique characteristics of your home and climate, so it’s important to understand the various options available.
Blanket Insulation
Often made from recycled paper, natural or synthetic fibers, or mineral wool, blanket insulation can be found in rolls or pre-cut panels called batts that are designed to fit typical attic joists and rafters. It is inexpensive and quick to install. However, it can lose effectiveness over time due to compression or moisture damage. It may also release gases that are a fire hazard.
Loose-fill Insulation
Also known as blown-in insulation, loose-fill attic insulation is usually a combination of fiberglass, mineral wool or cellulose. It is installed by spraying a liquid that expands when it dries, filling gaps and cracks. It is more expensive than other types of attic insulation, but it offers excellent thermal performance and is long-lasting. It can irritate the skin and eyes during installation, so it requires protective gear.
Rigid Foam Insulation
Rigid foam insulation is typically made from polystyrene, polyisocyanurate or polyurethane. It is a good option for attics with complex rooflines and difficult-to-reach spaces. It has a high R-value per inch and is highly durable. It can be difficult to install properly, so it is best left to professionals.
